Assessing the Need for Diet Re-Education

Everyone with diabetes has had diet education.  Haven't they?  They recall some sort of diet education, and usually accept whatever they got as decent education.  However, though most patients don't realize it, the diet education was usually less than optimal, at least by today's standards..

Why don't people realize that their diet education was less than optimal?  Simply put, it is because they don't know what they don't know.  They have no way of knowing what sophisticated skills are necessary to balance the diet with treatments.  They have no idea that they are lacking in their knowledge or skills.  Further, most diabetes education programs do not have a self-assessment so that patients can assess how well they have mastered the information necessary to keep them healthy.

The very best diabetes education programs in the United States teach pateints not only to understand the concepts of exchanges (or carbohydrates if they are counting carbohydrates), but also how to quantitate the dietary content of typical prepared foods or menu items.  Usually those programs are "in-residence" programs that require that you travel to the program, pay a hefty fee for room and board, and for the education.  But the education is excellent, because the immersion into the program provides intensity, relevancy, and plenty of practice.  Unfortunately, unless you have been to one of these programs, you probably haven't had the intensity and practice that is required to truly master the principles of self-management of diabetic diet.

However, there is hope.  This course helps you do a self assessment to determine if you need more diabetic education.  We hope that you find that your education was excellent, and complete.  If your education was excellent, then you will confirm that with the self-assessement in this course.  Unfortunately, many pateints find that their diet education was not optimal.  As a result, they want more education.  Unfortunately, most health insurance policies, including Medicare, have limited beneifts for diet education.  If you want to learn more about diet, you may want to take our courses addressing diet education.

You may want to try the Diet Simulation program.  It's excellent.  People who use it achieve learning outcomes similar to when they have one-on-one education with a dietician.  And compared to the cost of visits to a medical clinic, the program is inexpensive.  Very inexpensive!  A medical study, which describes the educational outcomes, is available for free on the " Free Articles" page.
